Unity Lighting + Environment Artist (Contractor)

Doborog Games is looking for an experienced Unity Lighting + Environment Artist to make our robotic laser sword fighting VR game world into a beautiful place!

Contracted

What we're looking for:

You are a lighting magician. You transform environments with your deep knowledge of the interplay between light and shadow. We need you to come in and hit the ground running, helping us turn our white box level layouts into fully decorated, beautifully lit, visually captivating environments.

We are making a fast-paced VR sword fighting game with a voxel aesthetic where you rip robots limb-from-limb with laser swords. We need YOU to come in and help build the world where the action happens!

Responsibilities:

  • Decorate 3D levels using our in-house level editor and a kit of pre-made assets, props, and blocks to provide our players with awesome environments to explore.

  • Dramatically light scenes using an intelligent mix of baked and real-time lights to enhance the visual appeal and mood of the game.

  • Mindfully strip away excess geometry and adjust lighting texel density to ensure quality lightmap bakes.

  • Utilize light probes, occlusion areas, and other lighting and level design techniques to reach rendering performance goals and FPS targets on mobile (VR) hardware.

  • Collaborate with the game design team to ensure artistic, gameplay, and world-building goals are met.

  • Participate in regular meetings and provide updates on progress.

  • Maintain clear communication and work efficiently as a remote contractor.

Requirements:

  • 3+ years of professional experience working as a 3D Environment/Lighting Artist.

  • Strong portfolio showcasing beautifully lit environments in a game context.

  • Proven experience working with Unity’s lighting solution (baked lights, mixed lights, light probes, lightmaps).

  • Refined artistic sense and attention to detail for staging and lighting scenes.

  • Proficiency in at least one 3D editing program (e.g., Blender, Maya, 3ds Max).

  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines as a remote contractor.

  • Experience with Qubicle or voxel-based games is a plus.

Working with us:

Our team is fully remote. Candidates should be able to accommodate at least a three-hour daily overlap with the U.S. Pacific Timezone to enable synchronous design collaboration.  As a studio we value:

  • openness and rapid iteration - we’re often livestreaming our development, sharing clips of progress on our TikTok, and providing Early Access builds to our community for visibility and feedback.

  • long-term happiness - we don't crunch, and we do our best to create an environment that values your long-term happiness over surprise deadlines.

  • reflection and growth - we regularly hold retrospectives to reflect on what’s gone well and where we can improve, and celebrate team members’ wins.

  • learning new things and making games! - our team loves prototyping and learning new things, and we regularly hold week-long game jams where team members can work on anything they’d like, whether it’s making a game to put on itch.io or learning a new skill.

Doborog is an equal opportunity employer. We celebrate diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.

Details:

  • Salary range:  $30/h - $50/h based on experience

  • Location: Remote, anywhere in the world available during Pacific Time (at least a 3 hour overlap)

  • Hours: Full-time (40 hours per week)
